Each author did an exquisite job at presenting, laying out, and find a wonderful conclusion to each of their novellas, with the limited space a novella allows. Definitely recommend this book of novellas. (Tthomas1028)

Excerpt

“I’m hungry,” Damon said, reminding her he was still splayed out on the floor beneath her.

Why was he even here and not running as fast as he could away from her after she’d hurt him so terribly and so often? Why did he bother? It didn’t make sense.

“Why?”

He raised his eyebrows. “Because the last thing I ate was a sandwich yesterday noon. Plus you seriously zapped my energy last night.”

She huffed. “I meant why, after I’ve treated you like shit more times than I care to remember, you still care?”

When he just stared at her for a moment, she wondered if he was trying to come up with a lie.

He pushed himself up into a sitting position. Being so close to his serious face and intense eyes was frightening. She had never before been so vulnerable, not even with Ralph. Because with Damon she cared, and he had the power to rip her apart with mere words.

“Sometimes, when I look at you, you are so utterly sad. And it’s like you’re not even aware of it. It’s like you only let yourself feel anger and disgust because they’re your crutch and if someone took that away from you, you’d fall and shatter. You deserve to be loved, Anaïs.”

Genre

Hearts must be broken is my novella that will be published in February as part of a Valentine’s Day anthology by Inkspell Publishing. It has had quite a journey from the first draft to the one which will be now published.

It started off back in 2014 as a sci-fi short story. But for a short story, the sci-fi element was too complicated, so I dropped that, and eventually I developed it into a suspense novella. Around that time, an editor friend has had a look at it. He suggested I trim it back down to a short story because novellas are notoriously difficult to sell. His description of it as a story in the thriller mode of Daphne du Maurier stuck with me.

I was familiar with du Maurier, especially with her novel Rebecca (did you know the Germans used it as a code key in WWII?). When I had trouble stating the genre of my novella for promotional purposes, I decided to research this “thriller mode of Daphne du Maurier”.

When I typed “Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier, genre” in the search engine, the diversity of the hits only confused me further on the issue of genre. Turns out, Rebecca fits into a gazillion different genres. Amongst them: coming-of-age, psychological thriller, suspense, mystery, romance, family drama, horror, gothic, and more.

While Hearts must be broken can’t possibly be compared to the epic Rebecca, it, too, fits into quite a few genre slots. It’s definitely a romance (if it being published in a Valentine’s Day anthology didn’t give that away), but it’s also dark and intense even though I dropped the sci-fi element. The love story isn’t all fluff and rainbows, it’s a lot grittier, suspenseful, with a mystery the protagonists have to solve if they hope for a happily ever after. The setting may be the twenty-first century London, but at times, it feels a bit gothic with the fog shrouding the streets and footsteps echoing through narrow alleys.  Whooo … 😉

Anyway, I hope you’ll like the mix of genres in the novella. I always prefer for the genres to be a bit mixed up instead of a straight up romance or hardcore thrillers. It adds to the complexity. What’s your preference?

Publication day for On the Slopes has finally arrived! It’s just a tiny novella, but it has a special place in my heart because I fell a little bit in love with the characters when I was writing it.

“The characters were realized, even the minor ones. I loved that the sport played so much into both the main characters’ lives.” Goodreads reviewer

Snowboarding means everything to Charlise, but she hasn’t met Sam Miller yet.

Despite the fact that her father hates her risking her life on the slopes that had taken the life of Charlise’s mother she is determined not to give up her career the way her mother did when she fell pregnant. Charlise wants to win medals, lots of them.

The last distraction Charlise needs is the American freestyle champion, Sam Miller, who utterly enthrals her with his wit and friendliness. Refusing to risk her career for a relationship, Charlise returns home for Christmas, determined to sort things out with her father. But the holidays culminate in an epic fight, and with a repeat of the painful breakup with Sam. However, new discoveries from her family’s past might change Charlise’s mind about Sam …

Downfall by S. D. Wasley

I don’t usually read paranormal romances, but I was charmed by Wasley’s short story in Summer Crush, Exquisite torture, so I decided to give her new adult novel Downfall a try. It’s the first in the Incorruptibles series and this is the blurb:

downfallFrankie’s cousin wants her to do three things this year:
1. Lose her inhibitions
2. Do something spectacularly stupid
3. Fall madly in love

Travelling was Frankie’s life. As the daughter of a big-name evangelist, she’s been able to feed her hunger for new sights throughout most of her teenage years. Then a hushed-up scandal gets her thrown off the tour circuit and stuck at her uncle’s house in the town of Augur’s Well.

Forced to repeat her failed senior year, it looks like a dismal existence for Frankie—until she’s invited to the bizarre meeting place of four mismatched people … and falls hard for the fascinating, secretive Cain Aleister.

Furtive meetings in an underground chamber … Latin words carved into a stone wall … intense desire … and a secret so elusive she’ll do almost anything to bust it open. Until now, Frankie never believed in grand passions—but that’s not the only one of her beliefs about to implode right before her eyes.

Looks like Frankie’s going to score three for three.

Intriguing, no?

What I loved about this novel was the ‘utter normality’ of the protagonist. She doesn’t one day wake up with super powers, she’s no witch or vampire, just a normal girl who flunked her senior year. The paranormal element is present, of course, but the story starts more like a mystery – and those I love to read. Even once the story veers into the paranormal sphere, Wasley’s take on it is different than any I’ve read so far.

Besides the intriguing story line, it’s Wasley writing style that gets me every time. She writes so effortlessly and fluently that one can’t but dive into the story from the first page on. She doesn’t tell the story but paints it in vivid colors and nuances. A joy to read!

On the Slopes #newadult #novella

My new adult novella, On the Slopes, is forthcoming in June 2016 from Inkspell Publishing.

Snowboarding means everything to Charlise, but she hasn’t met Sam Miller yet.

Charlise is a snowboarder with a promising career ahead of her.

To see whether Sam is more than just a distraction for Charlise, you’ll have to wait until June! But I’ll be giving you a sneek peak at the gorgeous cover soon. And it is gorgeous, I swear.
